House rebuild for Phineas' family, Mikinduri, Kenya

Veronica is raising six children on her own in a remote village within Chalice’s Mikinduri sponsor site. Her eldest and youngest sons, Phineas and Eric, are sponsored. Over the years, Veronica has struggled to provide basic needs for her family – particularly shelter, food, clothing, and medication. She lives with a neurological disorder, and this contributes to her difficulties.

Their family lived in a small, semi-permanent room built from mud walls with an iron sheet roof. Despite being small, they appreciated their home as a shelter from the elements and a source of security.

The El Niño rains hit their region in the spring. One night in May, there were extraordinary rains, fierce winds, and thunderstorms. Their mud walls could not withstand the intense winds. After a few hours, the rain had degraded the walls and chunks began falling off. They left gaping holes. By morning, much of the mud walls had fallen off, leaving only the sub-structure standing.

The Mikinduri site team have stepped in to help Veronica and her children get by in the immediate aftermath and also assist them to recover and rebuild.

They have prepared a budget of $9,569.68 CAD. Their priority is to construct a spacious, permanent, three-roomed house. It will be made of cement and stone, with a waterproofed timber and iron sheet roof. This will give Veronica and her daughters their own bedroom, the boys their own, and a communal family sitting/dining area.

The site will provide the family with four beds, mattresses, and blankets. They will also buy several months of Veronica’s medication.

Their community also wants to help. The Chalice family circles and site staff will support Veronica to put her one-acre plot into a food-producing farm. They will help her prepare her land and share farm inputs so she can both feed her family and sell extra at the market. Their contributions have an estimated value of $425 CAD.
