Nellore Houses with toilets (15), India

Many sponsored families in our Nellore site in southern India lack proper housing. Their homes are congested and unpleasant; they lack basic facilities, and disease spreads easily. Extreme weather poses a constant threat. Without toilet facilities, women and girls face both hygiene dangers as well as personal security threats when made to go to open fields.

Our Nellore site team worked with the sponsored families in the Chalice family circles to choose 15 families most in need of housing. Partnering with Chalice, they are launching a program to build them each a house with a latrine.

The families are living in cramped, unsuitable homes. The households are home to 70 people, including 33 children. All their income relies on seasonal, daily wage work. The average household income is about $700 CAD per year.

The brick and concrete houses will be 216ft2 with two rooms and a separate 24ft 2 latrine building. They’ll be fully plumbed and wired for electricity.

The total budget for the 6-month project is $105,537.40 CAD. This includes all the construction materials and labour.
