Welcome to Photo Friday! Each Friday, we share photo collections of our favourite shots from our sponsor sites around the world.
Animals are awesome! They play with us, help feed us, and even act as companions. It’s sometimes easy, though, to take these creatures for granted. Our top 5 ‘Animal Friend’ photos remind us to appreciate every creature that walks on this earth, because every one of them has an important role to play.
#5: Animal livelihood
Big things come from small creatures, and that’s certainly the case with these little chicks. These four siblings live together with their mom near Chalice’s Chiclayo site in Peru. Their mom, Magaly, raises pigeons and ducklings as part of her small business, and the kids love to catch them!
#4:Therapy Animals
The San Martin centre in Bolivia, near our Amanecer site, is a welcoming place for vulnerable teen boys who have lived on the streets. Agricultural therapy is a big part of the work done at the centre, and involves caring for animals and crops. The animals range from ducks and cows to hens and pigs and rabbits!
#3: Circle of life
Josué has received sponsorship through Chalice! His father is a fisherman, but unfortunately, it doesn’t provide a stable income for the family of four.
After staff at the Luis Amigo site in Guatemala got to know the family, they realized they would be a great fit to raise pigs. So they received two pigs from the Chalice gift catalogue. When those ones have little piglets, the family can then sell the piglets to others. It’s the circle of life!
#2: Hens of hope
Rosalia lost her job in Bolivia last year when the pandemic struck, and as the sole income provider for the family, it was a difficult time for her.
Fortunately, thanks to the Guadalupe site and kind Chalice donors, she and 34 other families received a small business when they needed it most. Rosalia was given 10 laying hens to breed chicken and eggs.
“My chickens are excited to see us at the end of the day like our dogs,” Rosalia laughs. “With the sale of eggs I will start saving for my children’s studies.”
#1: Adorable Animals
Okay, more pigs – we had to! These guys are adorable. Pigs may not be the cleanest animals, but the joyful way they roll around and play reminds us that appearances often deceive.
