Welcome to Photo Friday! Each Friday, we share photo collections of our favourite shots from our sponsor sites around the world.
Moms are extraordinary! They seem to have eyes in the backs of their heads, more hands than just two, and hearts so big that the outpouring of love encompasses everyone around them. This weekend in Canada, we honour moms by celebrating Mother’s Day. In anticipation of this special day, we’re sharing our top 5 “mom moment” photos, celebrating mothers doing what they do best.
#5: Landing the airplane in the hangar
At our CMAVIL site in Paraguay, mothers of sponsored children volunteer at the Open Centre each day, a community center for children. They cook and serve healthy, free meals, help with schoolwork, brush hair, and everything else the 70 or so children need to be happy, healthy, and ready for school. This mom is helping the little ones clean off their plates!
#4: Keeping us close!
Of course, one of the things moms do best is to keep us close to her heart. Sterlande and her sister love to stick close to their manman. This hardworking mom of two runs her own small shop near our Haiti North site office.
#3: Sharing her love of story time
Over the past couple of years, mothers from our Tondo site in the Philippines noticed a disappointing trend: children didn’t seem interested in reading storybooks anymore. Local mothers decided to bring about a reading revival, and starting bringing their favourite picture books to the daily lunch programs. The children watch in rapt attention while the mothers bring the characters alive with their voices.
#2: Has her hands full
We captured this ‘mom moment’ during a Skills@Chalice program workshop at our Tamil site in India. The program provides women with applicable and profitable employment skills, such as tailoring, crafting, IT and electrical work. As part of her program, this mom is learning to make jewelry – and doing it with her arms full!
#1: Teaching at home
Just like in Canada, moms at our Pochaiv site in Ukraine became teachers when schools closed and children pivoted to remote at-home learning. Our sponsor site staff worked with families to ensure that they had the materials they needed to access their school assignments. Moms supported each other through messages and prayers to keep spirits up throughout the most difficult and isolating months.
