Welcome to Photo Friday! Each Friday, we share photo collections of our favourite shots from our sponsor sites around the world.
Children and families from our sites love to cultivate their diverse hobbies and talents. Some skills are extremely practical, like crafts, handmade clothing, and handiworks. Mastering these talents can lead to opportunities for increased income, or even a full time business! Other hobbies such as sports gives children the chance to explore their passions and bond with friends.
This week, we’re sharing our top 5 “showing off skills” photos that we’ve collected from our sites. These children, parents, and staff are thrilled to show you their proud accomplishments and creations!
#5: Bragworthy bookmarks
These beautiful bookmarks are made by an artisans’ cooperative located near our Chiclayo site in Peru called “Artesanas por la Vida (Artisans for Life)”. They create unique handicrafts made from traditional fabrics and beads, which they sell to help support their families. Several mothers from our site are a part of the group. We purchased some of their bookmarks and dove ornaments to sell alongside a children’s book we published a few years ago!
#4: Best picture
Kasisi Primary School, located near our Serenje site in Zambia, serves children from underprivileged areas on the outskirts of the Zambian capital, Lusaka. In 2019, Kasisi Primary “has continued recording 100% pass rates and came out first in the district,” reports our site! This precious student is incredibly proud of the artistic creation that she made during free time in class!
#2: Dress success
Many of the women who participate in the Skills @ Chalice tailoring program at our Nellore site in India love to design dresses. With time, patience, and practice, some develop a wonderful talent and become skilled in all sorts of designs. Selling and custom making dresses can be a profitable business!
#2: Proving their medal
Sepak Takraw is a beloved Filipino game that resembles a hybrid of volleyball and soccer, in which the children rally a ball across a net, but only with their feet and heads. Last year, the Liceo school team from our Samar site won the district, provincial and national meets. They are proudly the top champions! Genesis, Ezekiel and Jerry also won MVP medals for Northern Samar!
#1: Great big greens
Neema, our accountant for our Mbinga site office, helps to maintain the site’s demonstration garden. The staff educates locals on how to maximize their output from their limited land. Locals also come to the farm for seedlings.
The garden has been a nutritional boost for both sponsored and non-sponsored children. The staff also sells the produce to Chalice families at a reduced rate, so they can in turn sell it for a profit in the market. By the size of those veggies, their efforts working in the garden look to have been a huge success!
Follow Chalice on Facebook and Instagram for daily updates from our sponsor sites, impact stories, and more! Be sure to check back next week for another Photo Friday.
