Welcome to Photo Friday! Each Friday, we share photo collections of our favourite shots from our sponsor sites around the world.
Here in Canada, autumn is in the air! Seasons at our sites look very different depending on which country they’re located in. Our Ukrainian sites have autumns just like ours, while others like our Filipino sites only have two seasons!
This week, we’re sharing our top 5 “autumn” photos from our sites. Whether or not our sites have a traditional “autumn” season, we think these photos filled with harvest goodies, hats, and sweaters just feel like fall!
#5: A hearty harvest
This farmer from our Mbinga site in Tanzania is enjoying a bumper harvest of corn! Farming is an essential source of livelihood in Mbinga. Many parents of sponsored children earn a living through farming. Nearby schools supported by our nutrition program also do the same to supplement their school lunch programs.
#4: Sweater weather
This little one from our Mikinduri site in Kenya is all dressed for a productive day at school in an adorable, cozy sweater! Though many may think of Kenya as having a hot climate, the weather does vary throughout the year, with July being a slightly cooler month. Hoodies and long sleeve shirts are enough to keep kids comfy during a dip in temperatures.
#3: All fired up
This family from our Ternopil site in Ukraine is taking advantage of above-freezing fall weather to prepare their winter firewood. Winters at our Ukrainian sites can be frigid, with snowfall, winds, and icy temperatures to combat for months on end. Thanks to sponsorship and gifts through our catalogue, vulnerable families are able to afford much-needed firewood.
#2: Hats off to Monica
Monica is a wife and mother of five. She works as a tailor specializing in knitwear like sweaters and hats. She previously had her own knitting machine, but it broke down, leaving her out of work for five months. Our Baraka site staff in Kenya heard of her situation and lent her a machine. “This job helps me provide for my family,” she says. “I had lost a lot, but now I am trying to recover so I can repair my machine.” Her real dream is a new model of machine, so she can make fashionable modern patterns.
#1: Apple of my eye
As a part of our sponsorship program, mothers from our Pochaiv site in Ukraine received nutrition training through our site. They learned how to make all sorts of traditional family dishes that they can cook at home. Here, they’re learning to cook with a fall favourite ingredient; apples!
