Most houses in the Samar site are flimsy structures made of light materials. This means that when typhoons or low-pressure storms hit the Philippines during the rainy season, houses are extremely susceptible to damage or collapse.

The Mombasa site works in a community called Kikambala, which has a relatively high proportion of elderly men and women. These elders were kept from accessing basic education, and they are in turn unable to teach their children literacy skills.
