Kenya

Chalice has been serving children and seniors in Kenya  since 1996 in nine sites in both rural and urban communities.

Primary education is free in Kenya; however that does not include mandatory items such as books and uniforms. School infrastructure is poor and there is little investment in other public infrastructure, including hospitals and road networks. Agricultural output is poor because the country relies on rain-fed agriculture, despite increasingly arid climates, which leads to widespread food insecurity. The country struggles with tensions among ethnic groups, which can lead to violence and displacement.

Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:
  1. Education - Ensuring each child completes their education until high school graduation, at a minimum.
  2. Nutrition & Agriculture - Our partners implement school feeding programs to ensure that children have a balanced and nutritious meal daily. They also work with parents to become more agriculturally productive with their available local resources and improve their agri-businesses.
  3. Inclusion of marginalized communities - Parents and seniors involved in family circles benefit equally from the sponsorship program’s funding, capacity building, and opportunities.
Our sites in Kenya:

Nairobi Chalice has partnered with ILEG in Nairobi since 1996. Merciline Nifa oversees the sponsorship program, in which academically talented boys and girls who come from poor families throughout Kenya are supported through post-secondary education alongside those of more privileged backgrounds. Sponsorship contributes to costs of boarding and educational materials.

Starehe Girls - Chalice has partnered with the Starehe Girls' Centre for Education and Excellence in Nairobi since 2013. Directed by Sr. Jane Soita, the sponsorship program supports academically talented girls who come from poor families throughout Kenya. Girls are given the opportunity to study towards a university education alongside those of more privileged backgrounds. Sponsorship contributes to costs of boarding and educational materials. Most of the students who graduate from Starehe schools go on to university. Chalice also supports their school garden, from which they are able to grow all of the produce for their meals.

Baraka - Chalice has partnered with the Carmelite Brothers of Mary Immaculate (CMI) from India in the rural regions surrounding the small town of Nanyuki since 2005. Directed by Fr. Jose Martin, CMI, the site runs the sponsorship program for both children and the elderly. In addition to sponsorship, the site runs a farming program which allows them to produce food on school land to supplement school feeding and use the schools as demonstration centres. Family circles provide complementary services including training, subsidized farming inputs, storage, and transport.

Mercy Care - Chalice has partnered with the Franciscan Clarist Sisters of India in the remote village of Kamuwongo since 2006. Site director, Sr. Francelit, oversees the sponsorship program for children, many of whom are orphaned, abandoned, or from broken homes. The Sisters also run a primary boarding school. To combat high rates of malnutrition, the site supports several school feeding programs. The site also provides medical assistance through a dispensary and extends them to the “out stations” through a mobile clinic.

Meru
 - Chalice has partnered with the Good Shepherd Sisters of Kenya in the region of Meru since 1999. Under the direction of Sisters Jane and Pauline, the Sisters run the sponsorship program in both urban and rural communities. In addition to sponsorship, the site runs a farming program which allows them to produce food on school land to supplement school feeding and use the schools as demonstration centres. Family circles provide complementary services including training, subsidized farming inputs, storage, and transport.

Mikinduri - Chalice has partnered with the St. Jude Catholic Sponsorship Program in the settlement in Kenya’s eastern region since 2008. Under the direction of Carolyne Gacheri, the site oversees the sponsorship of children, as well as a farming program which allows them to produce food on school land and provide the children a daily noon meal.  A nutritionist monitors the community and provides training in food preparation, dietary requirements, and sanitation. In addition to sponsorship, the site provides adult literacy classes, health workshops, and demonstrations of farming methods to improve food security.

Mombasa - Chalice has worked in Mombasa since 2001, partnering with the Sisters of St. Joseph. The site is situated on the outskirts of this coastal city, where the city’s poorest families live. Under the direction of Sr. Janefrances, the site focuses on orphans, vulnerable children, widows, single parent families, and those infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. The parents and guardians of sponsored children receive micro-finance and financial literacy training, as well as sessions on good hygiene practices, sanitation, nutrition, and parenting.  The site works with the parents to promote livelihood improvement through small business development.

Saidia - Chalice has partnered with the Saidia Children’s Home (orphanage) in the town of Gilgil since 2011. Everlyn Muhahala directs the sponsorship program in several schools in the community, based out of the orphanage.  The site serves a transient and internally-displaced population, and HIV is prevalent. All sponsored children have a baseline pediatric assessment done, including general health, eye, and dental checkups. Several schools within the site have gardens which grow enough food to conduct daily school-feeding programs; some even have excess to sell for profit.

Asembo (aka Rafiki-Ogwedhi) - Chalice has partnered with the Franciscan Sisters of St. Anne in the villages around Asembo in Kenya's Nyanza province ,since 2008. Sister Miriam Jagugo directs the sponsorship program, which is supported by the Chalice Nutrition Fund. Agriculture projects have been implemented, and sponsored families are introduced to good farming methods through community-run resource centres and work with groups to promote sustainable small scale agri-businesses. In addition to sponsorship, the site provides training to parents and youth in nutrition, HIV/AIDS care, diabetes, geriatric nutrition, micronutrient supplementation, kitchen gardening, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, meal preparation, nutrition, and oral hygiene.

Chalice has been serving children and seniors in Guatemala since 2001 in the small town of Champerico. Of all of our sites around the world, our Guatemalan families have most embraced the power of prayer, and are enthusiastic about forming prayer groups for adults and children.

Children in Guatemala are vulnerable to high dropout rates in favour of finding work. Malnutrition is common in the areas where Chalice works because the most affordable meals are filling but nutrient-poor carbohydrates. Families in these communities struggle with high rates of violence due to the presence of gangs and drug trafficking.

Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:
  1. Education - Providing after-school support programming to keep children in school. Additionally, to receive an education that will lead to post-secondary, children must enroll in private high schools for their final two years. Chalice provides assistance and scholarships to reduce these barriers to post-secondary education.
  2. Nutrition – our partners implement school feeding programs through the support of the Chalice Nutrition Program.
  3. Livelihood -  providing opportunities for parents to find work or begin their own income-generating projects

Our site in Guatemala:

Luis Amigo – Chalice has partnered with Proyecto Fray Luis Amigó  in the small town of Chamerpico since 2001. Sr. Romelia Velásquez  and her congregation of the Capuchin Tertiary Sisters of the Holy Family oversee the sponsorship program for both children and seniors. The site is composed of two separate nutrition centres for malnourished babies, two soup kitchens and a seniors centre. Chalice Children funds provide a daily lunch at the soup kitchen, 5 days/week in the My Golden Years dining room.  In addition to sponsorship, the site provides adult education and skills training, speech therapy, and psychological support for children and families.

Chalice has been serving children and seniors in Chile since 1996 in 2 sites in urban communities.  Chalice is a somewhat unique non-profit in Chile because we have been able to retain our Catholic identity through our partnerships with local religious organizations.

The economic disparity between wealthier Chilean communities and impoverished ones makes for quite striking contrasts. In the communities where Chalice works, there are high populations of migrant workers from neighbouring countries who have been attracted to Chile’s growing economy.  Unfortunately, these families frequently do not succeed in finding work and struggle with poverty. Families face high levels of domestic violence.

Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:
  1. Education - Ensuring all children complete their primary and secondary education.
  2. Livelihood - Providing opportunities for parents to find work or begin their own income-generating projects, with special attention to  the economic inclusion of migrant parents
  3. Domestic Violence Prevention - Providing education and awareness training for at-risk families.

Our sites in Chile:

Arica - Chalice has partnered with the NGO Corp de Proyectos Solidarios Caliz (Chalice Solidarity Projects Corp) in Arica city since 2012. Site Director Verónica Herrera oversees the care of both children and seniors in the sponsorship program. In addition to sponsorship, the site offers adult employment skills training, especially for women and indigenous communities. The site ensures medical checkups and treatments, and the Chalice Nutrition Program supports them with nutritious foods for their meal programs.

Santiago – Chalice has partnered with the Good Shepherd Sisters in the city of Santiago since 1996. Directed by Guido Mejías, the site serves both children and seniors in the sponsorship program as well as running a home for abandoned children. Additionally, the site strives to give training and education to mothers. They partner to offer training in food handling, baking, chocolate-making, hair-dressing, massage therapy and dress making.

BoliviA

Chalice has been serving children and seniors in Bolivia since 2004 in 6 sites, both in rural and urban communities. Our local partners tell us that Chalice is unique in the regions we serve because we dedicate more resources to supporting families at every level.

Children in Bolivia are vulnerable to discrimination towards indigenous populations and languages. Families face high rates of unemployment and/or under-salaried jobs. In the communities where Chalice works, there is very poor access to public services such as water, electricity, and transportation.

Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:
  1. Education – Bolivia sees high rates of children dropping out of school to find work. Chalice places emphasis on after-school support programming to keep children in school.
  2. Nutrition – our partners ensure children have balanced, nutrient-rich diets by implementing school feeding programs through the support of the Chalice Nutrition Program.
  3. Inclusion of marginalized communities – Parents and seniors involved in family circles benefit equally from the sponsorship program’s funding, capacity building, and opportunities.

Our sites in Bolivia:

Amanecer – Chalice has partnered with Amanecer Foundation in the city of Cochabamba since 2004. The site is directed by Sister Nora Prieto.  Amanecer site supports children, adolescents, women and babies, who have been mistreated, abandoned, and live on the streets. Most children live in one of five different homes for at-risk children, while the remainder live with their families. The children at the Amanecer Homes help in the vegetable gardens and orchards. The Chalice Nutrition Program supports them with nutritious foods at the schools and homes.

Guadalupe –While the Guadalupe site has been operating in the communities of Huayllani and 23 de Marzo in La Paz since 2009, the Levantate Mujer Foundation assumed its management under the leadership of site director, Sandra Rollano, in 2019. Despite the fact that the communities are within the city limits of La Paz, inhabitants of these communities face extreme poverty and isolation from the services and economic activities of the city. In addition to sponsorship, the site provides workshops on hygiene, disease prevention, nutrition, community leadership, and domestic violence.

Sucre – Our Sucre sponsor site is in two of Sucre, Bolivia’s most impoverished and at-risk districts. Chalice has run our sponsorship program here since 2012. Our local partner is the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Sheperd.

TukuyChalice has been supporting families here since 2010 and brought two sponsor sites under the care of the Tukuy Pacha Association in 2023.Our Tukuy sponsor site supports families in under-served communities in the city of Cochabamba, Bolivia. The site advocates for children, elders, people with disabilities, and families facing poverty and exclusion. Also the site works with parents and teachers to make schools and the community more inclusive. There is an employment opportunities program and other workshops for parents.

PENNT -  Chalice has partnered with the Fundación Arquidiocesana Creando Oportunidades (FACO) in the city of Cochabamba since 2006. Directed by José Luis Beltrán, PENNT spans four locations, placing special attention on encouraging children who would otherwise drop of school to find work to support their families, to remain in school. With this goal, the site provides an after school and daily meal program, and runs four soup kitchens. Site staff also offers workshops on health, hygiene, and family and community issues.

Yapacani - Chalice has partnered with the Salesian congregation of the rural town of Yapacani since 2004. Site Director Padre Arturo Bergamasco oversees sponsorship of children across 18 rural communities who have access only to a few grades of primary school. The site runs a dormitory in the town, where the older youth are able to finish their secondary education and learn technical trades. The site also works with seniors who live in impoverished conditions and runs a community centre and soup kitchen for the seniors.  The Chalice Nutrition Program supports them with nutritious foods for their meal programs. The site offers workshops for families on topics of health and livelihood skills-building.
