Chalice has been serving children and seniors in Peru since 2004 in 2 sites in primarily urban communities.  Our Peruvian sites are exceptional in their ability to support and learn from each other, constantly sharing best practices and creating cohesive programming.

Children in Peru are vulnerable to high drop-out rates in favour of finding work. In the communities where Chalice works, families struggle with unemployment because most jobs require post-secondary degrees, but university is prohibitively expensive. The communities face high rates of both criminal and domestic violence.
Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:
  1. Education – Peru sees high rates of children dropping out of school to find work. Chalice places emphasis on after-school support programming to keep children in school.
  2. Nutrition – our partners ensure children have balanced, nutrient-rich diets by implementing school feeding programs through the support of the Chalice Nutrition Program.
  3. Livelihood -  providing opportunities for parents to find work or begin their own income-generating projects.

Our sites in Peru:

Cañete – Chalice has partnered with the Sisters of St. Ann in the city of Cañete since 2004. In addition to the sponsorship program, Sr. Blanca Doris Bonilla Ruíz and the Sisters oversee the sponsorship program for both children and seniors. The site is comprised of a home for orphaned or abandoned girls, and a dispensary. The site also offers lunch for children and seniors in their soup kitchen supported by Chalice Children Nutrition.

Chiclayo -  Chalice has partnered with the Hope Centre (Centro Esperanza) in the city of Chiclayo since 2004. Under the direction of Maribel Ordóñez, the site runs the sponsorship program for both children and seniors. The site runs a Childhood Development Program which promotes capacity-building and leadership with a focus on gender rights, intercultural awareness, and the environment.  The site also provides skills-building workshops for artisan mothers, and provides family psychological counselling.

Paraguay

Chalice has been serving children and seniors in Paraguay since 2012 in 4 sites in primarily urban communities. Compared to neighbouring countries, there are very few international NGOs working in Paraguay. In the communities where Chalice works, there are no other similar supports. Our family circle-based sponsorship program is highly distinctive in this country.

Children in Paraguay are at a high risk of dropping out of school to find work, exacerbated by the high cost of education after junior high and the few opportunities for post-secondary education. Families who live outside major urban centres have extremely little access to public services. In the communities where Chalice works, families struggle with high rates of domestic and criminal violence.

Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:
  1. Education – Paraguay sees high rates of children dropping out of school to find work. Chalice places emphasis on after-school support programming to keep children in school.
  2. Nutrition – our partners ensure children have balanced, nutrient –rich diets by implementing school feeding programs through the support of the Chalice Children Nutrition Program.
  3. Livelihood -  providing opportunities for parents to find work or begin their own income-generating projects
Our sites in Paraguay:

Pukavy – Our Pukavy sponsor site is in the city of Luque, Paraguay. Chalice has sponsored children in the site since 2004, first under the direction of Dominican Sisters. The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians have been directing the site since 2022. Pukavy means ‘smile’ in the local Guaraní language. The site runs the Loma Merlo Soup Kitchen, provides healthcheck-ups and trains parents in baking, embroidery, sewing, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

CMAVILOur CMAVIL sponsor site is in the Villeta district of Paraguay, in both urban and rural communities. Chalice has partnered with the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a Salesian congregation, to run our sponsorship program here since 2012. CMAVIL stands for Centro Maria Auxiliadora – Villeta. The site runs an Open Centre, where children come before or after school for homework help, a lunch program, and social recreation. Also, skills and entrepreneurship training for mothers is offered.

Don Bosco –  In 2013, Chalice partnered with the Don Bosco Róga Foundation in the cities of of Itaugua and Capiata, which are located just outside the capital city of Asuncion.  Fr. Néstor Ledesma oversees the sponsorship program for both children and seniors in the community who are struggling.  In addition to sponsorship, the site provides an employment opportunities program for adults and workshops to improve families’ spiritual, socio-economic, and environmental well-being.

Ayolas – Chalice has partnered with the Diocese of San Juan Bautista de Las Misiones in the city of Ayolas since 2013. Under the direction of Javier Duarte Cristaldo, the site runs Chalice’s sponsorship program from a Centre for Children and Adolescents. The site offers after-school support, as well as workshops for adolescents on substance abuse and skills training for mothers. The site has a partnership with a local health centre to provide regular medical check-ups, such as ophthalmology and dental. The Chalice Nutrition Program provides nutritious food, with the help and advice of a professional nutritionist.

Chalice has been working with children and seniors in India since 1996, in 10 sites in both rural and urban communities.

In the areas where Chalice works, many of the children and families are stigmatized due to caste and tribal affiliation, and HIV/AIDS is endemic. Children with disabilities and conflict refugees likewise face discrimination and have poor access to basic public services such as schools and medical facilities. The job market is fiercely competitive, and many parents rely on daily, seasonal labour to earn income. Children are encouraged to drop out of school at an early age in order to find daily wage work. Young women are often discouraged from pursuing post-secondary education and careers in favour of marriage and running a household.

Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:

  1. Education – Ensuring each child completes their education until high school graduation, at a minimum.  Our Indian sites places special emphasis on providing access to education to children living with stigma or physical health conditions.
  2. Livelihood- providing capacity-building training for parents, especially women, to assist them in finding work or beginning their own income-generating projects.
  3. Care for the Extremely Vulnerable – Providing adequate care and resources for marginalized people in extreme need, including orphans and individuals living with HIV/AIDS, leprosy, disabilities, and severe social stigmatization.

Chalice has been serving children in Ukraine since 1998 in three sites in both rural and urban communities.  Our local partners tell us that Chalice is one of few international charities in their region, because the central government makes charitable work difficult with complex taxation laws.

Ballooning inflation has dramatically increased the costs of necessities such as food and heating. Coupled with high rates of unemployment or under-salaried work, parents have difficulty providing for their families. In the areas where Chalice works, there are high rates of chronic illness and cognitive disabilities such as cerebral palsy and Down syndrome.  Low-income families have little access to quality medical services, because public hospitals are underfunded and ill-equipped.

Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:

  1. Education – Ensuring each child completes their education until high school graduation, at a minimum.
  2. Financial inclusion & empowerment for parents – Giving caregivers back their decision-making power for the needs of their families.
  3. Nutrition & household needs – Providing families with fresh produce and staples to ensure their children maintain nutrient-rich, balanced diets. Assistance is also provided to help with the high cost of basic household needs such as heating and simple housewares.

An Update on our sites in Ukraine

ukraineprayerlarge

Feb. 1/23 - It’s been almost a year, and the conflict rages on.

Russia’s offensive on Ukraine has produced some alarming reports in the news. We are in constant contact with our site staff and want to keep you informed about the situation at our Ternopil, Pochaiv, and Lviv sponsor sites.

Although the recent security situation in our Ukrainian sites has been relatively stable, families and site staff continue to struggle with frequent air raid sirens and lengthy power outages. Additionally, families must try to cope with the ongoing hardships of lost wages and increases in the cost of almost everything.

Families are adapting to living with frequent power outages. However, families in smaller villages and rural areas experience much longer outages than residents of larger towns. Flashlights and candles are always nearby.

Despite the hardships faced by staff and families, all our sponsor sites in Ukraine have received their quarterly funds and Regional Assistance Funds.

The Ternopil site is “relatively safe,” according to site staff, but increasing airstrikes in western regions have placed everyone on edge. Air raid sirens sound for upwards of two hours at a time, and all the schools, banks, and other public institutions close until they get the ‘all clear.’

All three site offices remain open and are running as close to normal as they can – except for air raid siren interruptions.  Most sub-site offices are also open. Banks are operating well. There have been no delays in transferring funds from Canada to sites and from sites to families.

Schools are now a mix of in-person and online learning. If the school has a shelter, they can open for in-person classes, but it’s still the parents’ choice. The children learning from home mostly live in rural houses with root cellars where they shelter during the sirens.

The families have access to basic needs like food, water, and medical support; however, increased inflation and lost wages have made most families financially vulnerable. Ukrainian authorities are urging citizens to use electricity sparingly, because of serious damage done to power stations. “We are expecting a tough heating season this coming winter,” staff say. Thanks to everyone who supported Chalice’s home-heating programs for Ternopil and Pochaiv sites, the families in most need will have a winter’s worth of firewood.

“Thankfully, this year’s crops are generous in vegetables, and fruit trees yielded a good harvest,” the site staff report. “So people are processing fruits and vegetables to make cans for winter, they have picked potatoes to hold until the next season.”

“The Ukraine Regional Assistance Fund has also had a positive impact,” the site staff write. “The fact that Chalice is still able to distribute additional funds to families for education supports, food, and heating is a big help.”

You can continue to provide relief support through our Ukraine Regional Assistance fund. Sponsors can also continue donating special money directly to their sponsored child and their family. Please call us at 1.800.776.6855 and we'll be happy to assist.

If you sponsor a child or elder in Ukraine, you can send special money.

You can do that by either calling us at 1.800.776.6855, or by clicking here. In the section that says 'comments', include your child's code and a note that it's special money, so we know where to send it.

If you'd like to make a general donation to go to a specific site as a grant, please call 1.800.776.6855.

Unfortunately, our international courier service is not operating in Ukraine at this time. We will be unable to deliver correspondence to the sites until they resume service.

“Every night prayer is said in each of the families for peace in the country and for the safety of the family members who are defending Ukraine,” writes Luba, Ternopil site director. “We thank God for hearing our prayers.”

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for our brothers and sisters in Ukraine!
