The youngest of three children, Kurtis is bright and determined to succeed. Kurtis and her family have endured many difficult times through the years, including losing her dear father to kidney failure when she was just a toddler. This placed a huge responsibility on her mother who now had to raise her three children alone on meagre wages as a daily labourer.
By the time Kurtis was in the eighth grade, her mother was no longer able to make ends meet on her own. Seeking help from neighbours, she borrowed money to keep her children in school, but as the bills piled up she worried she could lose everything she had worked so hard for.
Thankfully, a field worker from our Madurai sponsor site saw the family’s struggle and stepped in to help by inviting Kurtis into the sponsorship program. Shortly after, Kurtis was sponsored by a generous supporter, and life started to improve for her and her family.
Thanks to her sponsor, Kurtis’ education costs were paid for and her mother could afford to buy better food using her small income to pay for their living expenses and schooling for the other children.
With renewed vigour, Kurtis studied hard, completed high school, was accepted into and complete a Bachelor’s degree in technology. She is now working from home (because of COVID) for a private company and has a bright future ahead of her.
Her brother has also finished post-secondary and is earning a good income as a computer engineer. Kurtis’ sister is happily married and recently had her first child. Together, they are now helping their mother who can no longer work due to ongoing pain in her legs.
“All of us are happy and feeling grateful to Chalice and my sponsor for their enormous support,” says Kurtis. “Because of you our needs have been met and my dream has come true. In the future, I will certainly support a child for their education. We pray for you all.”
