Chalice has been serving children and seniors in Peru since 2004 in 2 sites in primarily urban communities. Our Peruvian sites are exceptional in their ability to support and learn from each other, constantly sharing best practices and creating cohesive programming.
Children in Peru are vulnerable to high drop-out rates in favour of finding work. In the communities where Chalice works, families struggle with unemployment because most jobs require post-secondary degrees, but university is prohibitively expensive. The communities face high rates of both criminal and domestic violence.Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:
- Education – Peru sees high rates of children dropping out of school to find work. Chalice places emphasis on after-school support programming to keep children in school.
- Nutrition – our partners ensure children have balanced, nutrient-rich diets by implementing school feeding programs through the support of the Chalice Nutrition Program.
- Livelihood - providing opportunities for parents to find work or begin their own income-generating projects.
Our sites in Peru:
Cañete – Chalice has partnered with the Sisters of St. Ann in the city of Cañete since 2004. In addition to the sponsorship program, Sr. Blanca Doris Bonilla Ruíz and the Sisters oversee the sponsorship program for both children and seniors. The site is comprised of a home for orphaned or abandoned girls, and a dispensary. The site also offers lunch for children and seniors in their soup kitchen supported by Chalice Children Nutrition.
Chiclayo - Chalice has partnered with the Hope Centre (Centro Esperanza) in the city of Chiclayo since 2004. Under the direction of Maribel Ordóñez, the site runs the sponsorship program for both children and seniors. The site runs a Childhood Development Program which promotes capacity-building and leadership with a focus on gender rights, intercultural awareness, and the environment. The site also provides skills-building workshops for artisan mothers, and provides family psychological counselling.
