The Challenge in AsiaChalice in Latin America - The Challenge

Poorly funded public schools, a lack of qualified teachers and the cost of school uniforms and supplies make it difficult for children to attend school in Asia. Many children are in poor health due to malnutrition. Anemia, stunting, and poor dental health are common ailments.

The Change in Asia

The love of our supporters and the dedicated staff at our sponsor sites have improved the quality of life for families in our sites. First and foremost, our family funding sponsorship model puts funds directly into families' bank accounts every quarter. Having a steady source of funding allows families to budget and plan necesssary purchases, while enrolment in a Chalice family circle provides a base of support, education, and encouragement for anything from basic financial literacy to family problems or how to start a small business. Our sites focus on adult training and small business creation using funds from grants, programs, and the gift catalogue to give families the means to succeed. In India, a large sanitation project built hundreds of latrines, which drastically improved the health of thousands of people, while a multi-year child dental program in the Philippines restored hundreds of smiles.

indiathumbChalice has been working with children and seniors in India since 1996, in 10 sites in both rural and urban communities. In the areas where Chalice works, many of the children and families are stigmatized due to caste and tribal affiliation, and HIV/AIDS is endemic. Children with disabilities and conflict refugees likewise face discrimination and have poor access to basic public services such as schools and medical facilities.

phiippinethumbChalice has been serving children in the Philippines since 1999, and is currently working in three sites in both rural and urban communities. It is difficult for many children to attend school, because public schools are poorly funded and teachers are often under-qualified. The two most urgent issues of children’s health is stunting, which is caused by poor fetal development, and malnutrition.

bangladeshthumbChalice has been serving both children and seniors in southwestern Bangladesh since 1998. In the areas where Chalice works, children are encouraged to dropout of school at an early age in to find daily wage work. Young women are often discouraged from pursuing post-secondary education and careers in favour of marriage and running a household. Children and families are also subject to marginalization due to indigenous ethnicity, disabilities or geographical isolation and have poor access to basic public services such as schools and medical facilities. The job market is fiercely competitive, and many parents rely on daily, seasonal labour to earn income.

The Challenge in HaitiChalice in Africa- The Challenge

Lack of government funding, infrastructure, political instability, inflation, access to food and clean water, and vulnerability to natural disasters, are just some of the challenges of people living in Haiti. Malnutrition has led to health issues in both children and adults. In rural areas there is rampant unemployment, and unstable weather patterns can quickly ruin a small enterprise like a kitchen garden, chicken coop, or pig farm.

Large families are crowded into small homes built with mud, branches, and tree fronds. Lack of sanitary latrines and access to clean water mean water borne diseases are common. Parents do the best they can to care for their children and community members look out for each other, extending help whenever they can.

The Change in Haiti

The love of our supporters and the dedicated staff at our sponsor sites have improved the quality of life for families in our sites.

Sponsorship gives families the resources they need to keep their children in school. Chalice's family funding sponsorship distribution puts money directly into caregivers' bank accounts to buy the items their children need to succeed. The difference a uniform, school supplies, shoes and proper nutrition make in the life of a child is remarkable. Education equips future community leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to bring lasting change to a community.

The addition of a school lunch program in 2016 ensures children are fed and have the energy needed to learn. Knowing they will have a meal also encourages consistent attendance.

Projects and programs in the past 10 years have made a lasting impact on the people and communities we serve. From building hundreds of safe homes in Haiti South, to water projects, entrepreneurial ventures like hen barns and a jam co-op, and most recently a safe and sanitary latrine for Ecole Notre Dame de Lourdes in Haiti North and much needed repairs to the auditorium and washrooms at the Immaculate Conception School in Haiti South.

Our sites in Haiti

haitithumbHAITI NORTH
Chalice sponsorship began in the communities of Terrier-Rouge and Grand-Bassin in 1999. Haiti has been struggling with significant political upheaval and contracting economy. Food security is a primary and growing concern. Through the Chalice nutrition program, children in schools benefit from school meals. The site conducts health assessments for the children and monitors their development and provides workshops for parent groups on the importance of nutrition. The site runs a successful community poultry cooperative program.

HAITI SOUTH
Chalice has been working in the communities on Haiti’s southern tip since 2000, currently partnering with Missionnaires de l’Annonciation - Semeurs d’Espoir, an organization led by a religious Sister and staffed by religious brothers and lay associates. Haiti has been struggling with significant political upheaval and a contracting economy. Food security is a primary and growing concern. The site supports several school canteens and lunch programs through Chalice’s nutrition program. In schools that do not have a canteen, families receive kits of food to prepare at home. In the wake of the 2010 earthquake and Hurricane Matthew in 2016, Chalice supported several housing and water reconstruction projects throughout the area.

The Change in Ukraine

The love of our supporters and the dedicated staff at our sponsor sites have improved the quality of life for families in our sites.

Sponsorship gives families the resources they need to buy necessities every month to ensure their children can eat and attend school. Families are grateful to receive help through the gift catalogue to replace ancient stoves and fridges, replace broken furniture, and gift income opportunities through small tools and sewing machines. Projects like firewood for families, a dairy co-operative, school supplies for children, and fixing crumbling school infrastructure, have greatly improved the lives of thousands of needy families.

Chalice has been partnering with the “World for Children” charity in the Ivano-Frankivsk and Volyn regions since 1999. Sponsored children live with their families in both urban and rural areas. The site works with families who struggle to provide adequate nutrition and education to their children due to the area’s high rates of unemployment and low wages. There are also many children with chronic illnesses and disabilities who need the site’s support. The site also focuses on supplying clean water, hygienic washrooms and income-generating projects for the entire community.

ternopilthumbaChalice has partnered with the non-profit World of Children since 1998. The Ternopil site serves underprivileged families in 17 areas around the region, as well as a boarding school. There are very few jobs available, and work pays low wages, even for positions requiring a professional degree. Prior to the pandemic, many parents entrusted their children to live with relatives while they sought work outside of the country. The Ternopil site ensures families have access to quality food, household needs, hygiene products and educational materials. They build up confident young students through extra-curricular programs and strengthen families with workshops and psychological resources.
