Jennifer is a hardworking mother of three living near our Arica sponsor site in Chile. All her chidren, who range from five to 20 years old, are blessed with Chalice sponsors. In February 2022, Jennifer learned she was expecting her fourth child. At 16 weeks, her doctors informed her that the baby had heart disease. At 27 weeks, the doctors diagnosed Edwards Syndrome, also known as trisomy 18.

This diagnosis means that the baby had three copies of chromosone 18. It is a rare but serious diagnosis.

At six months, imaging informed the doctors that they needed to induce labour urgently - a high presence of amniotic fluid was in danger of asphyxiating the baby.

Jennifer delivered a boy, Josue Raul, who did not survive birth.

Jennifer was discharged the following day in stable condition, but experiencing profound grief for her son.

Her friends and neighbours have tried to help her with the cost of an urn and proper burial for Josue Raul, but could not fundraise enough for their friend. The Arica sponsor site staff have therefore requested $160.25 CAD to cover Josue's burial and help Jennifer on her path to healing.
