India

Chalice has been working with children and seniors in India since 1996, in 13 sites in both rural and urban communities.

In the areas where Chalice works, many of the children and families are stigmatized due to caste and tribal affiliation, and HIV/AIDS is endemic. Children with disabilities and conflict refugees likewise face discrimination and have poor access to basic public services such as schools and medical facilities. The job market is fiercely competitive, and many parents rely on daily, seasonal labour to earn income. Children are encouraged to drop out of school at an early age in order to find daily wage work. Young women are often discouraged from pursuing post-secondary education and careers in favour of marriage and running a household.

Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:
  1. Education – Ensuring each child completes their education until high school graduation, at a minimum.  Our Indian sites places special emphasis on providing access to education to children living with stigma or physical health conditions.
  2. Livelihood- providing capacity-building training for parents, especially women, to assist them in finding work or beginning their own income-generating projects.
  3. Care for the Extremely Vulnerable – Providing adequate care and resources for marginalized people in extreme need, including orphans and individuals living with HIV/AIDS, leprosy, disabilities, and severe social stigmatization.

Our India Sites:

Assam - Chalice has partnered with Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod in the geographically isolated state of Assam since 2009. Sr.Bindu Chacko oversees the sponsorship program, providing educational and rehabilitative services to the children in the communities, with a special focus on improved mobility and independence of children with disabilities.

Bangalore - Chalice has partnered with Good Shepherd Sisters in the state of Karnataka  since 1998. Sr. Lissy Chacko oversees the sponsorship program which spans across seven rural, remote, and urban locations over two states. In addition to sponsorship, the Sisters provide work to improve the socio-economic status of families and communities, and offer skills development programs such as tailoring, gardening, handicrafts, and English as a Spoken Language.

Berhampur - Our Berhampur sponsor site is in the coastal city on the Bay of Bengal in Odisha state. Chalice has partnered with the Diocese of Berhampur to run our sponsorship program here since 2007. The site provides specialized medical care for children with disabilities, runs housing and latrine construction programs and trains parents to start their own small businesses.

Sr. Jyoti Almeida and the sisters run the sponsorship program in Holy Cross Corso Farm, a home for children who are orphaned, abandoned, from broken or disturbed families, or live on the streets.  In addition to sponsorship, the site provides remedial tutoring, special education classes, and counseling for migrant children with disabilities. The Sisters run a nutrition program and ensure the children have access to health clinics and medical needs. Site staff run workshops for local parents to increase awareness of the importance of education.

Imphal - Chalice has partnered with the Diocesan Social Services Society (DSSS) of the Archdiocese of Imphal  since 2011. Rev. Fr. Binoy oversees the sponsorship program spanning seven locations in two tribal villages, where public infrastructure is extremely under-developed, lacking basic resources such as schools, drinking water, irrigation systems, and adequate housing. In addition to sponsorship, the site provides capacity-building training for women and parents to promote income generation activities. They also place emphasis on sustainable rural development through natural resource management education and organic farming.

Paraguay

Chalice has been serving children and seniors in Paraguay since 2012 in 4 sites in primarily urban communities. Compared to neighbouring countries, there are very few international NGOs working in Paraguay. In the communities where Chalice works, there are no other similar supports. Our family circle-based sponsorship program is highly distinctive in this country.

Children in Paraguay are at a high risk of dropping out of school to find work, exacerbated by the high cost of education after junior high and the few opportunities for post-secondary education. Families who live outside major urban centres have extremely little access to public services. In the communities where Chalice works, families struggle with high rates of domestic and criminal violence.

Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:
  1. Education – Paraguay sees high rates of children dropping out of school to find work. Chalice places emphasis on after-school support programming to keep children in school.
  2. Nutrition – our partners ensure children have balanced, nutrient –rich diets by implementing school feeding programs through the support of the Chalice Children Nutrition Program.
  3. Livelihood -  providing opportunities for parents to find work or begin their own income-generating projects
Our sites in Paraguay:

Pukavy – Our Pukavy sponsor site is in the city of Luque, Paraguay. Chalice has sponsored children in the site since 2004, first under the direction of Dominican Sisters. The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians have been directing the site since 2022. Pukavy means ‘smile’ in the local Guaraní language. The site runs the Loma Merlo Soup Kitchen, provides healthcheck-ups and trains parents in baking, embroidery, sewing, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

CMAVILOur CMAVIL sponsor site is in the Villeta district of Paraguay, in both urban and rural communities. Chalice has partnered with the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a Salesian congregation, to run our sponsorship program here since 2012. CMAVIL stands for Centro Maria Auxiliadora – Villeta. The site runs an Open Centre, where children come before or after school for homework help, a lunch program, and social recreation. Also, skills and entrepreneurship training for mothers is offered.

Don Bosco –  In 2013, Chalice partnered with the Don Bosco Róga Foundation in the cities of of Itaugua and Capiata, which are located just outside the capital city of Asuncion.  Fr. Néstor Ledesma oversees the sponsorship program for both children and seniors in the community who are struggling.  In addition to sponsorship, the site provides an employment opportunities program for adults and workshops to improve families’ spiritual, socio-economic, and environmental well-being.

Ayolas – Chalice has partnered with the Diocese of San Juan Bautista de Las Misiones in the city of Ayolas since 2013. Under the direction of Javier Duarte Cristaldo, the site runs Chalice’s sponsorship program from a Centre for Children and Adolescents. Ghana

Chalice has been serving children in Ghana since 1997 in three sites in rural communities in the far northern region of the country, which is highly under-developed when compared to the southern regions.

Communities in the rural north have little to no access to schools, transportation, or public services, which contributes to an existing feeling of disenfranchisement among the rural populations. The erratic climate consistently threatens agricultural output and leads to food insecurity. The majority of young adults move to the prospering southern regions, leaving behind communities that are disproportionately elderly and vulnerable.

Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:
  1. Education – Bringing quality educational facilities to under-served rural areas.
  2. Adult education - Empowering women with literacy, skills training, health, and their basic rights.
  3. Agriculture – Implementing programs that improve access to clean water and up-to-date information. With improved growing conditions comes greater food security for the families.

Our sites in Ghana:

Wa – Chalice has  partnered with Diocese of Wa and Lassia Tuolu Parish in the rural town of Wa since 1997. Under the direction of Pele Abraham Bright, the site implements the sponsorship program in 11 subsites, which are primarily Catholic primary and junior high schools, as well as one nursery. The site conducts programs to prevent and treat Hepatitis B, which is endemic in the region. In addition to sponsorship, the site provides leadership training, workshops on health and community issues, and cultural celebrations for the community.

Kondt - Chalice has partnered with the Wa School for the Deaf as its own site since 2013. Under site director Guong Nicholas, the school offers a nursery program, primary, secondary, and vocational education. Along with deaf students, the school serves children from very poor families and children with intellectual disabilites. In addition to sponsorship, the site provides employment skills such as bread-baking and catering services. The site also provides entrepreneurship training and sign language training for women.

Nandom – Chalice partnered with Nandom Parish in 2013. Site director Boniface W. Nakaar oversees the sponsorship program which supports parents and guardians through DFF (Direct Family Funding).  All sponsored children attend school, with most of the schools receiving support through Chalice Children Nutrition. The site also provides regular medical workshops on urgent health issues such as Hepatitis B and HIV/AIDS, which are endemic in the region. The site places a special emphasis on promoting the value of educating girls.

Chalice has been serving children and seniors in Peru since 2004 in 2 sites in primarily urban communities.  Our Peruvian sites are exceptional in their ability to support and learn from each other, constantly sharing best practices and creating cohesive programming.

Children in Peru are vulnerable to high drop-out rates in favour of finding work. In the communities where Chalice works, families struggle with unemployment because most jobs require post-secondary degrees, but university is prohibitively expensive. The communities face high rates of both criminal and domestic violence.
Through the support of sponsors and donors, Chalice and our local partners focus on:
  1. Education – Peru sees high rates of children dropping out of school to find work. Chalice places emphasis on after-school support programming to keep children in school.
  2. Nutrition – our partners ensure children have balanced, nutrient-rich diets by implementing school feeding programs through the support of the Chalice Nutrition Program.
  3. Livelihood -  providing opportunities for parents to find work or begin their own income-generating projects.
