After he completed grade 12, Charles left home to look for a job in the city.

charlesthumbHe ended up in the town of Machakos. It was not easy to find a job and he faced hunger and lack of other basic needs.

These struggles to survive in a new place led Charles, who was still very young, to end up in bad company. He was later apprehended and sent to prison to serve a two-year term.

While in prison, Charles learned different skills. He was very good in making leather products like belts, bangles, sandals, and jewellery. When he left prison, he had no one to assist him to start his own small enterprise. He thanks Chalice and ILEG for the great support and benefits they have provided.

Charles has a workspace, and he sells soft drinks. His dream, though, is to establish 'Charlie Designer Leather Products'. He requires a sewing machine, leather materials, a table and display, and other accessories. The cost is Kes. 105,000 or CAD $1,363.63.charles1

Charles designed and decorated a pair of sandals for his group as a gift to sponsor Tina for her kind words of encouragement through her email. Though the cutting of the leather and stitching was done at a friend's shop, he was filled with joy as he did the design and decoration work! Njiru Stars are happy to send the sandals as a gift to sponsor, Tina. They are happy and thank Tina and Chalice for believing in them and in their ability to better their lives and be better people in their community.

Owila Soft Drinks Shop was started by Charles as a retail outlet and he wished to transfer ownership to Njiru Stars Group to allow him the time to establish Charlie Leather Designer Products business. Njiru Stars is looking to expand Owilla Soft Drink Outlet to a wholesale outlet that will target the retail shops.

Chalice Njiru Stars helping the community in KenyaNjiru Stars support the community during COVID-19 pandemic

In this difficult time of the COVID-19 pandemic, members of Njiru Stars group have been in the forefront to help families who have been rendered jobless and are worried and anxious about what the future holds for them.

The children, who have been confined to their homes for long hours every day are restless and agitated, and this has heightened quarrels among siblings. Njiru Star members have come up with a plan to engage the children.

Across from their place of work, they have organized a playing field for the children and placed them in small groups according to their age/size. The members purchased a football for the children. Each day one group comes to the field at a particular time and when their time is up, they go back home. The mothers are happy to see their children happy and friendly toward each other.

Erick was chosen as the leader, and organizes the children. The other members check on the children to ensure they get back home safely.
