Job Title: Comptroller

Chalice (Canada) is looking for an experienced Comptroller to supports the CFM in managing Chalice's financial affairs by overseeing, supervising, and maintaining the organization's accounting activities and processes. The Comptroller prepares the interim monthly and final yearly financial statements and supporting schedules. The position involves supervision over general and specialized accounting areas such as receivables, payables, and fixed assets; administration of payroll; and preparation of statutory financial reports as required by government agencies. The Comptroller also acts as the first point of contact with the organizations’ banks and other financial service providers to administer Chalice’s business with them. The Comptroller works within and contributes to Chalice's faith and prayer-filled environment.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Develop and prepare timely and accurate financial statements and reports in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations (ASNPO).
  • Develop and prepare all necessary supporting information and working schedules to enable the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements.
  • Liaise with the external auditors during the annual audit on accounting matters.
  • Ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Advise management as and when required, on relevant CRA guidelines and how they apply to and impact Chalice’s activities and charity status.
  • Keep up to date on legislation or guidelines affecting payroll.
  • Ensure the implementation of legislated or mandated assessments, deductions, and other similar requirements on employee payroll.
  • Administer the payroll process, including the maintenance of updated salary and benefit information, calculation of income, deductions and tax, payment of employees, submission of payroll-sourced deductions to the Receiver General/CRA as required, and the issuance of the annual T4s and T4As.
  • Manage donations that come in the form of stocks, securities, and mutual funds, process them and issue tax receipts.
  • Record HST/GST receivables and complete and submit the appropriate informational return to the CRA as required.
  • Prepare the T3010 Charity return and submit it to the CRA as required.
  • Review, maintain, and enforce the organization’s accounting controls.
  • Prepare bank reconciliations monthly.
  • Ensure the security of payroll-related personnel and financial information in compliance with current privacy legislation.
  • Ensure that fixed assets are properly recorded, amortized, and disposed of as appropriate.
  • Manage banking operative relations and act as a cheque signatory and second approver for FRAAP requests.
  • Participate in developing the Financial Management Manual, Policies and Procedures, Contracts and Agreements that directly or indirectly impact finances.
  • Assists the CFM with financial reporting as required for management and Board meetings and other presentations.
  • Other duties and cross-training on tasks as delegated to ensure proper functioning and success of the Finance Department.
Qualifications – Education, Experience and Technical Skills:
  • Completed post-secondary program in accounting.
  • Minimum ten years of relevant experience is required, including at least two years of experience in not-for-profit organizations.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing financial statements.
  • Operational accounting abilities.
  • Proficiency with computerized accounting systems such as Sage.
  • Demonstrated expertise using ERP systems and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural setting.

Other Requirements:
  • Hours worked: minimum 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, in an office environment.
  • Working in a faith and prayer-filled environment, including attendance and participation in daily prayer meetings.
  • Knowledge, familiarity, and involvement with the Catholic Church and Faith will be considered an asset.
