For the past two months, Haiti has been facing one of the darkest periods in its history.
The country is suffering from violent protests, roadblocks, and robberies which are the result of increases in fuel prices. There are widespread demands for the resignation of the president.
A 19.5% inflation rate has resulted in a drastic increase in the cost of food and fuel (if you can find any). Poverty is increasing, schools are not operating, and our Haitian sponsored children and parents are struggling to survive.
Chalice's Haiti North Site is located in the town of Terrier-Rouge, 36 km from Cap-Haitian in the northwest corner of Haiti. It is severely affected by roadblocks, fuel shortages, and sharp increases in the cost of food. The sponsor site director has asked Chalice for $45,000 to distribute food packages to 1390 families ($32 per family) to offer some food relief during this difficult time.
The food kits will contain pasta, sauce, one gallon of vegetable oil, cereal, sardines and canned milk.
These food packages will give some relief to families suffering from the current food insecurity in Haiti. During this time of political unrest, it is always the most vulnerable who are most affected, and it is hoped that, by working together, we can help them during this challenging time.
