She is in grade 12 and her favourite subject is Math. She has been very grateful for her Chalice sponsor, who has helped make sure Guethna can afford her school fees and supplies each year.
Guethna started having stomach pain and was losing weight. Her doctors originally thought it was typhoid, but treatment did not improve her condition. Viviane approached the Chalice site staff for advice, and under their direction, took her daughter to another doctor. The doctor diagnosed peptic ulcers (painful sores in the walls of her upper digestive tract), as well as a bacterial infection and typhoid.
Her conditions can be treated with medications, but she will also need monthly medical checkups with diagnostic tests. She also needs to restore her weight, but her mother needs assistance to purchase enough food to provide her with an adequate diet. This is because the cost of food (and resulting rates of food insecurity), is very high in Haiti at present. As a single parent, Viviane does not have the financial means to afford the care Guethna needs.
The Haiti South sponsor site has requested $1,359.52 to cover the cost of seven months' worth of medication and the fees for her check-ups and tests. This will also cover a nine-month supply of nutritious food, so Guethna can regain her strength and continue pursuing her high school studies.
