He lives with his mother, two brothers and one sister. His mother supports the family by selling clothing in the street market. Onelson was born with a birth defect, and in the past year, generous Chalice supporters have assisted him to receive surgery that relieved his abdominal pain. His operation was performed by a specialist in Port-au-Prince, the country's capital.
Onelson is now doing well and living free from pain. But his specialist has strongly recommended that Onelson return to Port-au-Prince twice per year for an assessment and monitoring to ensure his continued recovery.
The journey from Jérémie, where Onelson lives, to the capital is almost 300 km. With the conditions of the road networks, the trip takes more than six hours. With the cost of transportation, accommodations and food, as well as the hospital costs, a biannual trip to Port-au-Prince is a significant expense, and beyond Onelson's mother's reach.
The Haiti South sponsor site has requested $3,153.06 CAD to help him receive the medical attention he needs to remain healthy and growing up well. The cost will cover the expenses for the specialist visit twice in the next 12 months. This includes his medication, hospital, and consultation fees. It will also cover his and his mother's food, accommodation, and transportation for the return journey, as well as within Port-au-Prince. It also includes a hamper of food essentials so Onelson is well nourished at home.
