Project Location: Mbiame, Cameroon
Project Type: Health
Project Code: CMM1220
Background: Alex is 27 years old and lives with his family near our Mbiame sponsor site in Cameroon.
He is the third oldest of 12 children and the brother of one of our sponsored teenagers. He has been sick most of his life and, due to chronic health issues, he is unable to work.
For more than seven years, Alex has been coughing and having chest pain. Living in poverty, without regular healthy meals, his health has continued to deteriorate.
In September, his condition became more urgent and he was taken to the Catholic Health Center and spent a week recovering and being evaluated by a visiting doctor. The doctor referred him to Shisong General Hospital, and he was admitted in October to the Cardiac Unit. He was diagnosed with serious cardiac problems and requires open heart surgery.
Alex and his family are peasant farmers who barely make enough money to survive. His father, who is the breadwinner of the household, is also often sick and unable to work regularly. The cost of Alex's surgery, medication and food assistance is $11,606.82 which far exceeds what the family can afford.
The sponsor site has asked Chalice to help Alex and his family pay for this critical surgery and associated medical costs. The sponsor site will ensure Alex gets the extra nutrition and support he needs to fully recover from this surgery and assist with work on the farm.
