Raissa, an eight-year-old girl sponsored though our Santiago site in Chile has suffered from chronic bronchitis since she was two years old.
Her mother has always been very careful to monitor her colds and has had to take her to the doctor frequently.
In March, Raissa underwent tests to see if she was asthmatic, which thankfully came back negative. However, the doctor noticed that at her young age the girl had highly developed mammary glands, so he referred her to another specialist to examine whether the child's development was normal. Due to the pandemic it has been almost impossible to access doctors in the public system and Raissa had to wait until December to be seen.
The specialist diagnosed Raissa with central precocious puberty, which could cause early mensuration and physical development, as well as, a left inguinal hernia, which must be operated on. She is on the waiting list for surgery and has been prescribed medication to prevent the early onset of puberty.
Raissa lives with her parents and sister. Her father is the only income earner, her mother used to get casual jobs but because of the pandemic she has been unable to work. One vial for Raissa's treatment exceeds her father's monthly salary. The sponsor site is asking Chalice for $725.69 to cover the first year of her medication. She will be re-examined next year to see if she needs further treatment.
