Kimberly, an architecture student, is a smart and hardworking young woman with three sponsored siblings through our Levantate Mujer sponsor site in Bolivia.
In April she started having repeated occurrences of stomach pain and on May 10 she had to be admitted to the hospital. She was diagnosed with necrotizing pancreatitis (extreme complication of acute pancreatitis). After almost a month, she was discharged from the hospital, but still has problems eating and can only manage small portions of liquefied vegetables.
Kimberly's mother took her back to the hospital in June but because of the pandemic she was told her treatment would be delayed. Desperate, she sought a private doctor who agreed to take on Kimberly's care free of charge. He ordered a tomography at the hospital - the cost of which was the responsibility of the family. She required emergency surgery to remove a cyst on her pancreas, the cost of which was covered by the private doctor.
Kimberly's mother is the sole provider of six children. She works cleaning private homes and her work has been negatively impacted by the pandemic. Thanks to sponsorship funds, she is able to meet basic needs, but there is no extra money to cover the cost of Kimberly's treatment. Thanks to her mother's perseverance to find a doctor to treat Kimberley free of charge, the cost to the family has been significantly reduced. However the testing, medication and special food to help Kimberly fully recover will come to $1,601.67 and her mother is not able to cover these costs.
The sponsor site director has asked Chalice to cover Kimberly's medical costs so she can recover and resume her studies once the college re-opens. She is truly an inspiration to all who know her and is fighting hard to regain her health and finish school so she can help support her mother and family.
