Fifteen-year-old Ashley is a sponsored girl from our Tondo sponsor site in the Philippines.
She was diagnosed with Diplegic Cerebral Palsy as a baby. She was sick quite often and at the age age of eight months, she was admitted to the hospital after sleeping for most of the week and vomiting when fed. At that time, Ashley was diagnosed with TB Meningitis and was admitted for one month. After a CT scan, it was determined that she had Hydrocephalus. It took some time before she was treated because her family had to secure government assistance. She had a shunt inserted when she was one year old, which relieved the pressure on her brain.
Since February 7, Ashley has been complaining of headaches and pain in her upper neck and the back of her head. She vomits two or three times a day and is sleeping more often. Ashley needs a CT scan and a new shunt insertion, but the cost of $677.09 far exceeds what the family is able to pay.
Ashley's father is a tricycle driver and the only wage earner for the family of seven. He earns 500 Philippine pesos a day (about $13 CAD), which is barely enough to provide for their basic needs.
Our sponsor site director has asked Chalice to cover the cost so as to relieve Ashley's pain and make her more comfortable.
