Benson, 16, is a sponsored child from our Meru site in Kenya. He fell ill in May after the death of his father.
His mother is mentally ill and unable to work. Neighbours stepped in, raised some money and took Benson to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
He had surgery to drain fluid from his brain and kidneys. His family was unable to pay the hospital fees and they were forgiven, given the family's poor financial position. He is now scheduled for brain surgery to remove the tumour on December 19, but the hospital will not proceed with the surgery unless the funds are paid. There is a resonable expectation that he could survive the surgery and without it, his life expectancy is very short.
The cost for the surgery is $7,806.01 which far exceeds what the family can pay. Benson's mother is unable to work and his slightly older sister has tried earning some money for food (about 50 Kenyan shillings or 65 cents Canadian a day) by working on a nearby farm.
The sponsor site director has asked Chalice to cover the cost of Benson's surgery so he can recover and live a normal life.
Funding Request: $7,806.01
