Gerald and his wife, Evita, are raising their three children near our Tondo site in the Philippines. Gerald supports his family as a cook, but they are also grateful that two of their daughters have Chalice sponsors.

Sr. Jane’s surgery and post-surgery care, Meru, Kenya

Gerald, 46, was diagnosed with tongue cancer in late 2022. Generous Chalice donors helped him undergo surgery and a course of chemo and radiation therapy. The tumour has fully healed.

In May 2023, when he finished his radiation therapy, he had anemia secondary to his cancer. His tumour had caused difficulty swallowing, and he had become severely malnourished. His hemoglobin level decreased, and he had two blood transfusions. During the blood transfusion in July, the doctor prompted Gerald’s admission because his nutritional health was so poor and there were many vital deficiencies to correct.

A chest X-ray revealed that Gerald had pulmonary tuberculosis caused by his gravely weakened immune system. He was hospitalized for nine days, given IV antibiotics, and started TB medications.

When he was discharged, he and Evita struggled to manage the bills. Gerald is the primary breadwinner, and he has not had an income throughout his illness. They have relied on the support of friends, family, and their daughters’ sponsors. The Tondo sponsor site staff have therefore requested to help Gerald cover this second round of medical treatment. $1,883.42 CAD will cover Gerald’s hospital lab fees, X-ray, professional fees, daily expenses, and pharmacy/medicine expenses.
