Muthukumar is a father of two, supporting his family as an agricultural daily wager. His son Prasanna is studying in grade seven with the support of a Chalice sponsor, while Varshini completes her grade 11 studies.
In May 2023, Muthukumar went to a tree-cutting job. As he was working, a log fell on him, and a thorn injured his eye. A piece of the thorn remained in the eye.
He was rushed to the hospital for surgery – the surgeons removed the thorn fragment and stitched the eye injury. They discharged him with medication. But in the weeks afterwards, his vision deteriorated. He returned to the hospital for a second surgery in July. Now his vision is improving.
Muthukumar’s hospital expenses totaled $859.49 CAD. This is far more than he and his wife, also a daily-wage worker, can afford. The Tamil sponsor site has therefore requested to cover his surgery expenses. These funds will cover his consultation fees, blood tests, optic scans, medicine, and surgical items.
