Dayana lives with her mother, Sonia, as well as Sonia’s parents, in her grandparents’ home. She is 15 years old, has been sponsored since she was eight years old through the CMAVIL site in Paraguay. Other than sponsorship, the family relies on the grandparents’ pension for their daily needs. Sonia has a spinal condition that impedes her mobility, so Dayana’s aunt Claudelina is the one who takes care of Dayana in everything related to her health.
Dayana was diagnosed with a heart condition called severe aortic insufficiency when she was seven years old. She has been in treatment for many years, but her health rapidly deteriorated in July 2023. She was diagnosed with congestive heart failure.
She now needs urgent surgery. She needs a prosthetic biological aortic valve. It is a complex surgery, and it’s scheduled for July 25, 2023.
Dayana’s treatment has always been in a public hospital, but this aortic prosthesis device is only available in private laboratories, sourced from outside of Paraguay. Dayana’s family must supply the valve in time for the scheduled surgery.
The prosthetic valve and Dayana’s transportation to the hospital comes at the cost of $10,989.10 CAD. This is more than seven years’ worth of the pension support the family lives on.
Aunt Claudelina came to the CMAVIL site staff requesting this life-saving help. Understanding the urgent need, they have requested the full cost of the aortic device.
