In late January, Sebasthiyar started having seizures. His wife, Parimala, rushed him to a hospital where he was given immediate treatment before being referred to another facility that could perform a CT scan. Before he could receive a diagnosis, the seizures began again and he lost the use of the right side of his body. Parimala took him to the neurology hospital, where he was admitted. There an MRI revealed the diagnosis: Sebasthiyar had a blood clot which had blocked the blood flow to his brain – called an acute infarct.
The doctors gave him a special injection to remove the blood clot in the nerve. He stayed in the hospital for eight days and was kept under observation. They discharged him in early February and taking his medication at home. His road to recovery will be a long one: he is not yet able to talk, walk, or move his right hand properly. He is doing physiotherapy exercises.
Sebashiyar’s hospitalization has incurred medical bills of $2,982.20 CAD. This is far beyond the family’s means, even when Sebasthiyar is able to contribute to the family’s finances. Parimala’s wages as a cook cannot cover these expenses. The Tamil site staff have put forward a request to Chalice to assist the family financially. These funds will cover Sebasthiyar’s lab tests, diagnostic imaging and scans, medicine, doctors’ fees, admission, and nursing charges.
