Beginning in June, Noreen started having sharp pains in her pelvis.
She got a referral for a pelvic ultrasound, which revealed a uterine growth that was bleeding. The doctors needed to remove it immediately, and the operation took place not long after.
While the surgery was a success, the doctors advised Noreen to seek an MRI of her abdomen and pelvis. Through these scans, Noreen has received a diagnosis of stage 1b cervical cancer.
Her doctors recommended an immediate session of Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). This treatment offers Noreen a 90% chance of total recovery. The IMRT sessions consist of 25 radiotherapy sessions within five weeks, five chemotherapy sessions within the five weeks, and three brachytherapy sessions within three weeks.
The immediate treatment is very promising but comes at a private expense of $7,192.24 CAD. Noreen and her husband, Boniface, have been financially struggling since the pandemic to provide for their children's daily needs. Noreen is the main breadwinner of the family since Boniface was involved in a motor accident last year. Through her two sponsored sons, the Nairobi staff learned of Noreen's unmanageable medical expenses. The site staff could tell that "Noreen is devastated" that she cannot afford her radiation treatment on top of the household expenses.
They have therefore requested the full amount on Noreen's behalf. The requested funds cover the costs of Noreen's MRI scans, private consultation fees, her treatment planning CT scan, radiotherapy, brachytherapy, and chemotherapy.
