Adrianne is 17 years old and is sponsored through our Starehe Sponsor Site in Nairobi, Kenya.

Chalice Critical Needs Funding for Adrianne, sponsored child in KenyaShe gained entrance to Starehe School for Girls due to her strong grades in school. She is a very good and hardworking student and is well liked because of her positive outlook and she hopes to become a doctor one day so she can give back to others.

Life to date for Adrianne has not been easy. She was diagnosed with chronic osteomyelitis (a severe, persistent, and sometimes incapacitating infection of bone and bone marrow) at the age of 10 and has undergone 25 operations/procedures since that time. She has been on and off antibiotics and painkillers to treat and prevent further deterioration of this illness.

In September of last year, after several experiences of severe vomiting, she was diagnosed with severe gastritis. Her doctor recommended surgery and a very strict and nutritious diet for a five month period. The cost of the surgeon's fees and follow-up consultations with him, as well as a gastroenterologist, medications, transportation costs to and from the hospital, and assistance with food costs, while she is at home during two school breaks, is projected to be $3,166.

To date, the Sisters at Starehe School, with the help of sponsorship fees, have been managing her medical costs but they are not able to cover this large expense. Adrianne comes from a very poor family and her mother is a single parent with a very limited income and no ability to help with these costs.

Our sponsor site director, Sister Jane, has come to Chalice requesting that we assist with payment of the costs to help Adrianne. Through all of this, Adrianne has maintained a positive and grateful attitude.
