Ponciana is the mother of five children and currently lives alone with her youngest daughter María Nicol, who is sponsored through our Yapacani site in Bolivia. Ponciana has been experiencing headaches for several years, but in July, the pain became unbearable.
No longer able to combat the headaches with regular medication, the 53-year-old mother went to the hospital, where her doctor diagnosed a benign bone tumour on the right frontal region of her skull. She needed surgery and that doctor referred Ponciana to a hospital with a specialist neurosurgeon.
Ponciana, who has been a widow for 17 years, felt afraid that she could not afford her treatment. Her medical expenses are $1,462.93 CAD, which include the surgery, post-surgical tomography scan, medications, and four out-patient follow-up appointments.
She approached the staff at the Yapacani sponsor site, who put forward the request for funds from Chalice, and committed to journeying with her and María Nicol throughout this time. María Nicol’s Chalice fieldworker, Godofredo, will accompany the family during Ponciana’s hospitalization and surgery and will help them manage the payments. Godofredo will also accompany her to all her follow-up appointments and ensure she gets the aftercare she needs.
