Violeta is a 49-year-old mother of three children living near our Samar sponsor site in the Philippines. Two of her children, Dante and Rey, are blessed with Chalice sponsors.

Chalice critical needs - Medical expenses for Violeta, Samar, PhilippinesTheir sponsors have helped Violeta and her husband, a fisherman, provide for the children's education and nutritional needs.

Violeta had a lump on her left knee. She was not able to walk, and the pain kept her awake all night. On cold nights, the pain radiated from her thigh to her knee. A local doctor advised her on what to take for pain relief, but the pain only worsened, and she had lost a significant amount of weight. She also noticed that her urination and bowel movements were irregular, and her stomach was bloated with edema.

A worker at the Samar sponsor site helped Violeta get to another clinic with a laboratory. After tests, the doctor prescribed new medication. This new course seemed to help at first, but her condition worsened again. A week later, a field worker came to visit, and Violeta was crying from pain. The worker decided to rush her to the hospital immediately. There, Violeta was diagnosed with hepatic schistosomiasis (chronic liver disease), diabetes, and rheumatism.

The cost of Violeta's sudden hospitalization, new medications, and supplementary food comes to a total of $355.54 CAD. These bills are far beyond the family's limited means. The Samar site staff have therefore put forward a request on the family's behalf, so Violeta can regain her strength and return to the life that she loves: being a mother to her three children.
