For the past two months, Haiti has been facing one of the darkest periods in its history. Due to an increase in fuel prices, the country is suffering from violent protests, robberies, and roadblocks. The conflict has escalated and there are widespread demands for the resignation of the president.
A 19.5% inflation rate has resulted in a drastic increase in the cost of food and fuel (when you can even find it). Poverty is rampant, schools are closing, and Haitian children are struggling to survive. Our sites have asked for our help to provide a three month's supply of food for children in need.
Our three Haiti sponsor sites have asked Chalice for help supplying emergency food relief to struggling families during this difficult time.
Haiti North is asking Chalice for $45,000 to distribute food packages to 1390 families to supplement their feeding. The food kits will contain pasta, sauce, 1 gallon of vegetable oil, cereal, sardines and canned milk.
Haiti South is having difficulty in receiving orders from Port-au-Prince due to the level of insecurity. The sponsor site director has asked Chalice for $35,000 to feed 1336 families. The site has determined the best method to supply relief to sponsored families is for a food distribution for areas where it is easier to get a bulk food order with the remaining sponsored children receiving money into their direct family funding accounts so their guardians can purchase food locally.
