Project Location: Lviv, Ukraine
Project Code: ULL0621

Background: Lviv sponsor site was established in 2019 and consists of 660 children living in the city of Lviv and in villages outside the city.

Chalice community projects - Fitness playground for Shchryets school, UkraineThis site, formerly a sub-site of Pochaiv site, is run by experienced staff. The site supports children in both large urban centres and small rural villages where many of the families survive on small scale agriculture with limited incomes.

Every day, 160 sponsored children attend the Shchyrets village school, along with 506 peers and teachers. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, when gyms and sports facilities closed, the value of exercise became increasingly apparent. The teachers and staff knew that the benefits of physical education extend past healthy bones and strong muscles, but that it also improves energy levels, attention spans and emotional health. The educators became concerned that they would experience long-term effects in both body and mind if they could not participate in enough active recreation.

This project will create an outdoor fitness playground at Shchyrets school, giving the children, staff and wider community access to non-electronic exercise equipment such as weightlifting devices (chest, bicep, leg press etc), a rowing machine, and an “airwalker” (a gliding walking simulator).

The goal of the playground is to allow children, students, and their parents to participate in physical education classes and spend time together recreationally. The playground will be safe and family-friendly alternative to private gyms, and a destination for fun in the fresh air. Not only will 160 sponsored children benefit alongside their peers, but also their cumulative 83 family members.
