Project location: St. Mary's Special School, Kawambwa District, Zambia
Project type: Water
Project code: ZKK0919

Background: Kawambwa sponsor site was opened in 1997 under the direction of Sr. Rose Chanda with the help of a Canadian priest, Rev. Father Lavendu.

Chalice community projects - 2 borehole wells in ZambiaSince then, the site has undergone many changes; the major one being the opening of a sub-site in Mporokoso, 180 km away from Kawambwa, in 2011. Thus the site has two sub sites, namely St. Mary's Special School and St. Odilia Special School.

St. Mary's Special School is located in the Northern Province of Zambia, Kawambwa District. It was officially opened on November 1, 1961 by the Sisters of Charity of Schydel (Holland) with the main goal of educating blind children and equipping them with survival skills in craft work and home economics. The school also equips the blind children with mobility skills that enable them to move independently. The main goal of the institution is to produce an intelligent, independent, and self-reliant young adult. The site is currently managed by the Sisters of the Child Jesus, a local congregation founded by Bishop Laure. The congregation has partnered with Chalice in fulfilling its main goal of also offering education to children with no visible disabilities who are economically disadvantaged.

Zambia is one of the poorest countries in the world and this community is one of the poorest in the country. Many households live on one dollar or less per day. With the low economic status many parents lack any education and struggle with providing education for their children.

This project will benefit 779 children at St. Mary's Special School and the community around the school

Project Objectives: This project will drill two boreholes which will be powered by solar and solar pumps that will deliver water to two 10,000 liter tanks. This will make clean water readily available to the 779 students at St. Mary's Special School and make water available to the nearby community, church, and teachers' compound.

This project will see a reduction in the water-borne diseases and improve the health standards of the beneficiaries, leading to a higher standard of living for all.

Budget in Canadian Funds: $30,795.53
