Chalice community projects - Construction of 35 new houses, Madurai, India

Our Assam sponsor site is in the district of Kamrup in the northern state of Assam, India. Chalice partnered with the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod in 2009 to run our sponsorship program. Many of the families live in marginalized groups or have children with disabilities.

Many sponsored and non-sponsored families in our Assam site are living in unsafe, temporary houses and do not have latrine facilities. Their homes are constructed from bamboo and tin sheets, which cannot withstand the frequent rainstorms that hit the area. Families here also cook with woodfires in the house. Lacking good ventilation, the soot and odor of woodsmoke permeates their homes. The air quality is poor and affects the children’s health and focus when at home.

The Assam site staff have therefore partnered with Chalice to construct houses for 25 selected families in the Guwahati and Changsar communities.  With an average of four in a house, 100 people live in these households, 50 of whom are children. 80% of the parents earn their income as daily-wage workers, and the rest earn their living as domestic workers or drivers. 22 families have Chalice sponsored children.

Each 21.45m2 single-level home will have a central room, kitchen, washroom, and verandah. They will be fully wired for electricity and plumbed.

The Assam site staff will hold workshops with the families to discuss how to keep themselves healthy and keep their new homes hygienic. Topics include safe drinking water, waste management, food handling, and community sanitation.

Parents will contribute to their homes in-kind by providing some voluntary labour and contribute what construction materials they can.

The total cost for all 25 homes is $139,615.025 CAD., which includes all the construction labour and materials, a brief orientation meeting for the families, and any small overhead costs. Each home therefore costs approximately $5,584 CAD to build. This amount has been offset by the in-kind contributions of the families, which has an estimated total value of $2,233 CAD.  Your support will bring dignity, security, and hygiene to 100 people most in need, and safe, clean place for 50 children to grow up.

Budget in Canadian Funds: $139,615.025 CAD.
