Homes in the remote villages are not connected to a gas line, and they depend on firewood to cook meals and to heat their homes during the seven-month Ukrainian winter. Many houses in rural areas are equipped with old clay furnaces for heating. Some families also use coal. The families are also in a vulnerable financial situation, as their income dropped significantly due to the war. Businesses have closed or work hours have been cut. Defence spending is reducing municipal budgets, and critical social benefit payments are delayed. Traveling for seasonal work abroad is prohibited for men under 60. There are families in the Site where sponsorship support is their only income. On top of this, the price of food, medicine, transport, and other daily essentials have all dramatically increased.Summer comes as a relief because the families do not have to heat their homes. Luba and the Ternopil site team anticipate a “really tough heating season.”Firewood consumption has increased sharply. Correspondingly, firewood prices have increased as well. This situation puts the most vulnerable families “on the edge of survival.” The widespread unemployment has made this additional assistance is even more urgent.Luba and her team have identified 90 families in the Ternopil site who will not be able to heat their homes this winter without financial assistance. They have put forward a request to Chalice for $43,750.00 CAD, which will be distributed to the families to buy firewood this November. This will be a great blessing for 90 sponsored children and their 413 family members.
