About Yapacani ...
Yapacaní is located 126 kilometres northeast of the city of Santa Cruz in Bolivia. The rural population in this area lives below the poverty line. None of the isolated communities has a secondary school, and community schools only go up to a maximum of eighth grade. After the children finish eighth grade, they either abandon their education entirely or move to the town of Yapacaní where they rent rooms and are often left on their own.
Chalice has been working in Yapacaní since 2004. The Yapacaní Sponsor Site helps children in 18 rural communities who have access only to a few grades of primary school. Some older children are housed in a Site-run dormitory in the town of Yapacaní, where they are able to finish their secondary education and learn technical trades. Families of sponsored children receive training in health and handicrafts. In order to promote environmental sustainability, some families also receive seedlings to plant. In addition, Yapacaní Sponsor Site also works with seniors who live in impoverished conditions.
