St. Charles Lwanga School is home to 270 boys and girls (some with disabilities and special needs, as well as recovering addicts), from the slums of Nairobi.
Collapsed latrine in background - Critical Needs Funding Requested to Bulid new Latrine for School in KenyaThe school provides a formal education and hope to end the cycle of poverty and homelessness for these children. It was started in 2010 by Brother John Kennedy Oronjo, a member of the Catholic religious order known as the Brothers of St. Charles Lwanga, and he continues to operate the school to this day.

There is no financial support from the government and the children are unable to contribute. Some funding for this operation has been received in the form of grants from international organizations, but the majority has been raised through smaller community groups and parishes in Canada and other parts of the world from which Brother John and his order have been able to solicit support. Chalice is one of its supporters.

The school runs on a very tight budget and has been faced with stiff challenges when heavy rains led to the collapse of one of two latrines serving 150 boys. The latrine that collapsed on March 7 has been rendered useless and unsafe for use. The remaining two-door toilet cannot accommodate over 150 boys as this creates very unhealthy conditions for the children. Therefore, St. Charles Lwanga administration, led by Brother Oronjo, has come to Chalice with an urgent request to provide funds to build a latrine to replace the one that collapsed.

The latrine will take three weeks to build at a cost of $4,172.91
