Project Name: Rikiau Borehole Water System
Project Location: Kangeta, Kenya
Project Type: Water
Project Code: KMR0417

This Chalice Sponsor sub-site in Kangeta is run by the Good Shepherd Sisters. The site believes that every child with an education is a child with a future.
It is their hope that all sponsored children be educated, self-reliant members of society, going forth with the dignity and self-confidence only knowledge brings.

Kangeta, and the surrounding area, is very dry and classified as semi-arid. The lack of rain in the area, exacerbated by the current drought in East Africa, presents many problems for the efforts of the site. Many children attending Rikiau Primary School are experiencing the impact of drought on a daily basis. Many have to walk 10-20 km per day to collect water, leaving little energy to focus on school work, or the time to attend class at all. Chalice began a feeding program at the school and supported a school farm, but the lack of water has forced the programs to be discontinued. This critical shortage of water and nutrition inevitably leads to children dropping out of school and/or children not graduating classes due to poor academic performance.

In response to the water shortage, the site has requested that a borehole (deep well) be constructed - a borehole that would supply water to the school, parents of the children at the school, and the larger community. The borehole will save the families Chalice Community Project - Water for Kenyamany hours per day by reducing the distance to walk for water, as well as provide both the school and the neighbouring families the water to irrigate their kitchen gardens and grow their own sustainable food supplies. With a sustainable supply of homegrown food, the school feeding program will resume and the children will receive a healthy meal daily.

Project Objectives: The goal is to provide safe water for Rikiau Primary School and surrounding community and provide improved food security as well as promote health and hygiene in the community. This project will consist of the drilling of a borehole and equipping of the well for use, purchase and installation of a suitable pump and power generator, and purchase and installation of a 10,000 litre storage tank on top of the pump house. The beneficiaries will be 500 families, including the families of 30 sponsored children. Total funds being requested from Chalice are $80,953.00. The community will provide the land and ongoing maintenance.

Budget in Canadian Funds: $80,953.00
