Hlib lives with his parents, one brother and two sisters, in a two-room wooden house with a slate roof in Kovel, western Ukraine. He is in grade five at the village school and his best subject is Math. His favourite activities are reading books and playing soccer with his friends. He is often sick with colds and fevers. At home, he helps with all the chores. Hlib would like to become a professional soccer player when he grows up. His parents are struggling to provide the basic needs of their family. Many children in Ukraine live in extreme poverty, with no hope of a productive future. Many workers, including professionals, are caught in the economic struggles of the country, and often go for weeks without pay. Sponsorship provides educational support, improved nutritional intake, medical care and treatment, clothing and footwear, and other basic necessities.
