About Kerala ...
Kerala has a humid equatorial tropic climate. It is known to be the cleanest and least corrupt state in India, but has the highest presence of disease and poor health. Its land is nearly three times as densely settled as the rest of India at 859 persons per square km. As of 2007, the net enrolment in elementary education was almost 100% and was nearly balanced between the sexes, social groups, and regions, unlike other states of India. While possessing a literacy rate above 98%, this region also has the highest unemployment rates in India.
The Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod run the Chalice Kerala Sponsor Site located in southern India. They have eight locations, each headed by a different Sister. The families there belong to Devadasi, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe; migrant workers, rural poor, and children with disabilities, etc. These children are able to access quality education as well as various development opportunities.
The site also takes care of their health and nutritional development. The Sponsorship Program contributes to the development of families and communities in the region, as well. In order to ensure sustainable livelihood opportunities for the siblings and parents of the sponsored children, market-oriented employability skills are imparted through the Skills@Chalice Program.
