About Imphal ...
Imphal Sponsor Site is located in the Himalayan foothills in the northeastern state of Manipur. It is administered by the Diocesan Social Services Society (DSSS) of the Archdiocese of Imphal. The Chalice Sponsor Site of Imphal, India works with the poorest people in Manipur without regard for caste and creed. The projects are focused on capacity building, empowerment of women, child and women development, people's organizations, social welfare, income generation activities, natural resource management, organic farming, sustainable rural development and emergency relief. Their goal is to ensure that tribal children are given ample opportunity for basic education, a dignified life, assume responsible citizenship, improve the living conditions of families and assure food security for all.
Imphal is a primitive village. Its inhabitants are mainly from the Maring Naga Tribe. Agriculture is their mainstay. Some of their problems are: no cultivable land; no available drinking water supply, no irrigation systems, no school, and families depend on daily labour. They live in deplorable conditions - they have no running water, latrines or bathing facilities. Most houses have two rooms plus the kitchen. The Maring Naga people are educationally and economically behind and have a high rate of school dropouts. Government health services are often not available due to lack of trained personnel. Many people living in remote areas are denied basic rights because they lack knowledge of, or cannot access, important government programs.
