Bolivia is a landlocked country and one of the poorest and least developed countries in Latin America, despite being rich in natural resources such as natural gas and petroleum. More than half its people live in poverty. Bolivia was named after Simon Bolivar, a leader in the Spanish American wars of independence. Independence Day is celebrated on August 6th, marking their independence from Spain in 1825. Bolivia has a very rich and diverse heritage of very distinctive music and handcrafts.
Life in Bolivia
43.4% of all Bolivians live in poverty; 21.6% in extreme poverty. 61.2% of all rural Bolivians are considered poor. Rural life is deplorable. Those living in poverty inhabit cramped quarters, that are either rented or made of "found" materials. Many of the poor in the Altiplano Region have no other option than to work in the mines under very primitive and dangerous conditions.
Primary education is mandatory and free (8 years). Secondary education (4 years) is not compulsory. The literacy rate in Bolivia is reported to be 86.7% (2012). However, this level of literacy is often quite basic, restricted to writing one's name and recognizing numbers. School attendance has improved, but the Bolivian literacy rate remains the lowest in South America.
